Channel 4 has unveiled an ambitious plan to further bolster its presence across the UK, reaffirming its commitment to increasing its operations outside of London. As the broadcaster celebrates the five-year anniversary of its regional expansion, it is setting out a comprehensive package of measures to reach its goal of 600 roles based outside the capital.

New Recruitment Drive Across the Nations and Regions

As part of its strategy, Channel 4 will actively advertise new roles across all its regional offices, including Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, and Glasgow. This move is designed to prioritise recruitment outside London, with the aim of building a more representative workforce that reflects the diversity and talents of the entire UK. To further support this initiative, Channel 4 will introduce a relocation package, offering London-based employees the opportunity to move to one of its regional offices, with financial support included.

Channel 4’s Chief Executive, Alex Mahon, highlighted the significance of this move:
“Channel 4 has always led the way in representation, and now we are going even further. We’re strengthening our Nations and Regions commitment by offering our people the chance to relocate and making new roles available in our regional offices. This is a special moment for us as we continue to grow our presence across the UK.”

Expansion in Manchester

As part of the expansion, Channel 4 has announced plans to open a new office in Manchester in summer 2025. Located at the highly anticipated No. 1 St Michael’s development, this 100-desk space will double Channel 4’s current footprint in the city. The Manchester office has always played a pivotal role in Channel 4’s operations, and this new investment marks a significant step in reinforcing its presence in the North West.

A Focus on Skills, Content, and People

Today’s announcement is the first of several to come, as Channel 4 sharpens its focus on three core pillars: skills, content, and people. These efforts are part of its wider Fast Forward strategy, designed to ensure the broadcaster continues to serve and represent the entire country.

By increasing its presence in the regions, Channel 4 aims to champion more programme-making across the UK, supporting local creative talent and strengthening its ties to communities outside London. The new measures are not just about physical expansion but also about making sure the broadcaster’s work and influence are truly national in scope.

Commitment to Regional Representation

Since launching its regional offices in Leeds, Bristol, and Glasgow, Channel 4 has continued to build a strong presence across the UK. This expansion has enabled the broadcaster to produce content that resonates with audiences nationwide, while fostering greater inclusion and representation within its workforce. The new Manchester office will play a key role in this ongoing journey, offering more opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and growth outside London.

Channel 4’s decision to offer relocation support and prioritise regional recruitment demonstrates its commitment to levelling up the UK’s media landscape. By shifting its operations and focus, Channel 4 is helping to decentralise the UK’s media industry and create a more balanced and representative media environment.
