Today marks a historic moment for BBC Radio 2 as Scott Mills officially takes the reins of the breakfast show, stepping into the coveted role previously held by Zoe Ball. Broadcasting his first show at 6:30am on Monday, 27th January, Scott Mills kicked off with a heartfelt statement that captured the excitement, nostalgia, and humility of this career milestone.

With the station’s new sung jingle filling the airwaves, Scott reflected on the journey that led him to this point:
“When I think about the previous occupiers of this show, it becomes mind-blowing to me—for a kid who wanted to be on the radio but wasn’t sure he had the self-confidence to actually do it.”

For a broadcaster who’s been a household name on BBC radio for 25 years, this new chapter feels like the culmination of a dream. Scott’s journey from budding DJ to one of the UK’s most recognisable voices has been inspiring for listeners of all ages, and his passion for the medium shines through in every word.

Listeners can expect Scott to bring his signature energy and warmth to the breakfast show, along with some fun-filled features. The Birthday Game and the hilariously chaotic Easiest Quiz on the Radio are set to become morning staples, injecting a dose of light-hearted entertainment into the early hours. Supporting him on this journey are familiar voices Tina Daheley on news and Ellie Brennan on travel, ensuring the show remains as vibrant and dynamic as ever.

Scott was keen to emphasise the role of his audience:
“I want the listeners to be the star of the show,” he said.

He also acknowledged his connection with his fans, old and new:
“A lot of you may well have grown up listening to me, and I’m sure a lot of you will not have much idea about me at all. Either way, if you can make me part of your morning routine, it would mean so much.”

The debut show wasn’t short on surprises. One standout moment came from Stockport Railway Station, which was temporarily renamed “Scottport” in his honour. A live announcement from the station, endorsed by the Mayor, added a quirky and celebratory twist to the morning.

Scott also unveiled a brand-new Top of the Hour jingle, created especially for the show. He hopes it will become a catchy and memorable highlight of listeners’ mornings, adding a touch of Radio 2 magic at 8am every day.

The first song to grace Scott’s breakfast show was none other than Rock DJ by Robbie Williams, a fitting choice to kick off a new era with a lively and iconic tune.

In his final remarks during the show, Scott reflected on the significance of the moment:
“I’m going to give it everything I’ve got – this might be the best day of my life (apart from getting married).”

Scott Mills’ debut breakfast show on BBC Radio 2 has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting, heartfelt, and entertaining era. Whether you’ve been a longtime fan of Scott or are just getting to know him, his warmth and enthusiasm make it clear that mornings on Radio 2 are in very safe hands.
