BBC Asian Network’s Birmingham Move: A New Era for British Asian Radio

The BBC Asian Network is taking a significant step in its journey to relocate its operations to Birmingham, with five more radio shows set to broadcast from the city starting next month. This move is part of the BBC’s ambitious “Across the UK” initiative, aimed at decentralising its operations and fostering greater engagement with regional audiences.

Expanding Birmingham’s Role in British Asian Broadcasting

Starting from Friday 6 September, the following popular shows will be moving to the BBC’s Birmingham studios:

  • The Official Asian Music Chart with Nayha
  • Panjabi Hit Squad
  • DJ Limelight
  • Saturday with Vallisa
  • DJ Kizzi

These shows will join an already diverse lineup of programmes being broadcast from the Mailbox in Birmingham, including the recently launched One More Chai, hosted by SMASHBengali and Guranisha Randhawa, and the Official British Asian Chart Show with Jasmine Takhar.

Currently, 60% of the Asian Network’s programming is produced in Birmingham, and with this latest move, the network is on track to fully transition from London by April 2025.

Bringing the BBC Asian Network Home

DJ Kizzi, one of the hosts making the move, expressed her enthusiasm, stating:

“I’m really excited to move to the Birmingham Studios, there is such a great vibe and energy of the BBC in Birmingham, plus it is situated in the heart of the city and I love working there. BBC Asian Network originating from Birmingham also feels really special – almost like we are bringing it home!”

Her sentiments capture the broader significance of the BBC’s strategy, which not only aims to relocate but to root the network in the cultural heart of the UK’s Asian community. Birmingham, with its rich and diverse cultural heritage, is the perfect setting for this next chapter.

Supporting Local Talent and Innovation

As part of the move, Asian Network is committed to nurturing and collaborating with local suppliers and production companies in the West Midlands. This includes ongoing partnerships with Birmingham-based Glenvale Media and new collaborations with True Thought Production and VoxWave. These efforts align with the BBC’s strategic priority to develop a vibrant pop music supplier community in the region, ensuring that the content resonates with the local audience while reflecting the diverse voices of British Asians across the country.

Ahmed Hussain, Head of Asian Network, shared his excitement about the move, saying:

“I am delighted to start the next stage of Asian Network’s move to Birmingham, bringing us a step closer to uniting the station in our new home by April 2025. We are proud to champion British Asian music and culture and I’m excited to continue to work with and support local production companies in The Midlands, who are helping to drive fresh ideas to our exciting and growing platforms.”

A Bright Future for British Asian Media

The relocation of these shows to Birmingham marks a pivotal moment for the BBC Asian Network. By embedding itself deeper into the Midlands, the network is not only enhancing its connection with local communities but also reaffirming its commitment to showcasing the richness and diversity of British Asian culture. As the BBC continues to roll out its “Across the UK” plans, Birmingham is set to become an even more significant hub for British Asian media, innovation, and talent.
